Zorgprofessionals vertrouwen op de medische wetenschap bij het maken van behandelkeuzes. Helaas komt nog niet al het beschikbare bewijs terecht in de wetenschappelijke literatuur. Het is bekend dat met name studies met niet-significante resultaten (negatieve studies) vaak niet worden gepubliceerd. Minder bekend is dat er naast deze publicatiebias ook andere vertekeningen kunnen optreden die de effectiviteit van behandelingen positiever doen lijken dan daadwerkelijk het geval is. In een recent artikel in het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Psychological Medicine, illustreren Dr. Jojanneke Bastiaansen (GGZ Friesland/UMCG) en haar collega’s dit probleem aan de hand van behandelstudies voor depressie.
